NYS Federation of Taxi Drivers

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, Inc. (NYSFTD) is a not-for –profit trade organization founded in November of 1998.  Founded by a group of concerned Livery Cab drivers, the purpose of the NYSFTD is to promote and further the common interests and goals of the people who drive cabs for a living be it yellow, livery, black-car or any other type of hired vehicle in the State of New York.

The NYSFTD has met with officials from the Taxi & Limousine Commission, NYPD, elected officials, religious and civic leaders, hospitals, community organizations, and has since developed safety programs to protect the lives of cab drivers and the passengers that they transport. We are currently working on the most critical problem, making the taxi industry safer. Before the NYSFTD there was no organization representing, or defending the rights of cabbies.

Because of the efforts of the NYSFTD there are new laws that are being enforced by the authorities to protect the well being of cab drivers. There have been studies conducted by OSHA that reveal that the livery industry is by far the most dangerous industry in the country, 6,000% more dangerous than any other job in the country, with the exception of police officers. The NYSFTD is working with the current administration to make the taxi industry much safer using technology such as GPS tracking and alarm devices and other systems that are available to deter, apprehend and prosecute the criminals have been preying on this industry for years.

Federation efforts have just begun. We propose many changes with the current rules and regulations that govern this taxi industry. Cabbies are humble family people seeking to transport and serve their communities. Without them millions of inner city people will have no means of transportation. We need to honor and protect them.
